Jockey Kerrin McEvoy says Sepoy is giving him a “similar feel” to his rampaging autumn campaign which snared him the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper Stakes double.
McEvoy won a jumpout on the colt at Werribee last month and rode him again in a searching gallop at Flemington on Tuesday.
“I’m quietly confident he will come back to the same level as last time if not better,” McEvoy told Radio Sport National.
“He has come back stronger as a three-year-old and has given me a similar feel.
“He has got the same attitude towards his work and around the stables.”
In recent years Golden Slipper winners have struggled to train on and make an impact but McEvoy is bullish about the prospects of Sepoy who is at $1.35 to win first-up in Saturday’s Listed Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
“I rode him work on Tuesday morning and he has come on from that trial (at Werribee),” McEvoy said.
He said that with an improving dead (5) track at Caulfield on Saturday, conditions should be perfect for Sepoy.
“He has got a nice record on deadish ground,” McEvoy said.
“He has got to carry (equal) topweight with the penalty but looking through the race there appears to be a little bit of pace.
“He has drawn (barrier six) outside African Pulse and just depending on how it works out we will possie up into a handy enough spot.
“It is an interesting race as some three-year-olds come back and improve as well so we have got to wait and see what happens but as a jockey I’m happy to be aboard him.”
